Gameplay
9 years after the release of the orig
inal fast-paced platform romp, NMK released the re-vamped Bombjack Twin. Featuring enhanced graphics, bonus stages and two players on-screen simultaneously, this was Bombjack for the 90's.

As with the original game, the objective is to clear each level of all bombs by walking, jumping or falling onto them. Bonuses are awarded for sparking bombs collected, with a large bonus awarded is all sparking bombs on a level are picked up.

As mentioned above, one major update from the original Bombjack is the addition of bonus levels. Here, players have an increasingly tight time limit in which to clear an enemy free level of sparking bombs. Later bonus levels have been craftily designed, meaning that the next sparking bomb is in a completely different part of the screen altogether.

One thing you should keep an eye on if possible are your lives at the bottom left of the screen. During play the remaining Bombjacks will yawn, sleep and dance around. It's little touches like this that show the care and attention that has been put into designing this game.

A number of collectors I have spoken to prefer the simplicity of the original 1984 Tehkan release, and while perhaps the 90's update doesn't have the retro charm of the original, with a bit of practice, it's very addictive and extremely fast-paced.

About The Board
The Bombjack Twin PCB is a single layered affair with two banks of dip switches present, enabling you to alter the usual settings such as coins per credit, difficulty and number of lives. You can also set which country the player starts on (Japan being the default setting).

Dip-Switch Settings
When the board arrived in my collection the difficulty level was obviously set at very easy, the number of lives were 5, the free play feature wasn't selected, and the screen needed to be flipped. Unfortunately, the person who supplied me the board didn't know what the switch settings were. My first step was to search around the internet for the settings. I tried Spies, Coinop.org and even Klov in an effort to obtain the settings, but no luck.

Once this avenue of investigation had been exhausted, it was time to put a request out to the UKVAC (UK Video Arcade Collectors) mailing list, to see if anyone there had the settings. The only response I had was from a certain Chris Hardy, a well-known Mame contributor, who had dug around the Mame source code and found the settings. Unfortunately, because the way the Mame code referenced the Bombjack Twin code, the settings were actually upside down and back to front to the ones he listed. Some faffing around with his settings and my board, I finally managed to put together the correct Bombjack Twin dip-switches.

Here are the settings. Many thanks go to Chris Hardy for taking the time and effort to help me get to the bottom of this and get the switch settings on to the internet at last.

Secret Test Mode
The secret test mode is quite hard to access, but by following these instructions, you should be able to get onto it. Many thanks go to Tobias Steffens for passing these details on to me.

(1) - Reset the game and hold down buttons 1 and 2 for player 2. If you have done this fast enough, you will see a `READY?` message on screen. If you do not, you will need to try again.

(2) - Now, press the following buttons for player 1: 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1. If you have done this correctly, you should now see another message which reads `9th Mar 1992`.

(3) - You are now in the test mode.

Home Versions
As far as I am aware, no home versions of Bombjack Twin were ever released.
