Game:
Crude Buster
Manufacturer: Data
East
Year: 1990
Genre: Platform beat-em-up
Players: 2
players simultaneously
My Version is: The
board only (Japanese release)
Story
New
York A.D. 2010: Nuclear explosions of unknown origin have hit New York
City! The city was thrown into chaos... And the massive Metropolis was
all but destroyed.
And 20 years after: The restoration process had barley begun before a
brutal rival organization marched into the ruined city and conquered it.
This organization is called Big Valley, and their soldiers are armed with
the most advanced and bizarre weapons.
AND NOW ...The government has requested two men enter the ruins secretly
and defeat Big Valley. These two men will be paid well for the job. These
warriors names are...Crude Buster.
Background
Released in 1990, Crude Buster saw you (and a friend, if you had
one) navigate through six enemy infested levels, causing as much
death and destruction as possible as you go along.
Although Crude Buster is really just an average side-scrolling beat-em-up/platform
game, it does have one slight innovation in that items of the scenery
can be picked-up and used as weapons against the oncoming enemy
forces. If you see a sign post, give it a kick punch, rip it out
of the ground and start using it to whack the enemies. Want something
bigger? How about an entire car?! Simply pick it up, and you've
got one massive missile to throw at the bad guys. |

Why This is in My Collection
This was actually the second JAMMA PCB I ever bought. I'm sure most
of you know what it's like when you buy a new piece of gaming hardware
(in my case a Supergun), you then want a number of titles to play
on it so you don't have just the one and get bored of it. So, with
fond memories of playing this down my local sports centre in the
very early 90's I shelled out for this game.
I found this for sale at a UK based arcade game and PCB stockist,
and being more than a little new to the PCB collecting scene I shelled-out
more than I should have for this, although at the time I didn't
realise it!
Playing the game over a decade after my first introduction, and
I can say that it's certainly aged. The player sprites move extremely
sluggishly around the screen, and the sound effects are some of
the worst I have ever hear on an arcade game. When you hit an enemy
instead of making some "arghh" or "ugh" sound
he makes some weird (what I can only describe as) "squawk".
Still, the sound isn't all bad. The hilarious "What a day!"
your characters utter when they've been knocked senseless to the
floor still raises a smile to this day. |

Points
of Note
In
the United States this title was released as `Two Crude Dudes`,
whilst in Japan and other territories it was released as `Crude
Buster`.
A home version of this game exists, and was released in 1991 for
the Sega Megadrive/Genesis as `Two Crude Dudes`.
As you can see from the screenshot on the left the backgrounds have
been greatly reduced in quality to that of the arcade original.
